General Information

16th National N scale Convention Canberra

10th to 13th October 2019

Ibis Styles Hotel, Narrabundah, ACT

Overview

The Convention commences the evening of Thursday 10th October with the Micro-Trains Welcome Reception and will finish on the afternoon of Sunday 13th. A Convention banquet will be held on Saturday evening.

The convention is only a few days after the Australian Model Railway Association Sydney exhibition which is held over the NSW Labour Day long week end. So, you may consider going to Sydney then spending a few days in Canberra before the Convention taking in the myriad of activities and places of interest in this region. The Convention venue and associated accommodation is only a short drive from the Parliamentary Triangle area (Parliament House, National Art Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, National Library, Museum of Australian Democracy, etc), the War Memorial, and many other Canberra attractions. Regional attractions that you may not have previously considered may be the Goulburn Round House, remains of the Yass Tramway or even Mt Stromlo Observatory or NASA’s Deep Space Tracking Station at Tidbinbilla. The food scene in Canberra is exceptional both for quality and variety. There are also a number of renowned wineries in the area, and for those interested, Canberra hosts numerous award-winning craft brewers.

Registration

Registration is now available on the registration page of the web site. Registration includes a delegate pack, Convention mug, morning and afternoon teas, lunches, welcome buffet and Convention banquet. An early bird registration fee of $295 is available until 31st May 2019, after which full registration will be $325. A student’s discount is available, please see the registration form. Early registrations would be appreciated so that progressive payment obligations can be met.

The registration form also has provision for delegates to order additional tickets for partners or guests to attend the Micro-Trains Welcome Buffet ($30.00) and the conference banquet ($45.00).

Accommodation

The conference venue boasts accommodation, restaurant, bar and plenty of parking. On site rooms have been reserved until the end of June, after which time the reserved status will revert, so book early. The venue is offering accommodation at special rates if the password “RAIL” is used at time of booking. Breakfasts are included in their “flexible” room tariff, not in the “hot” rates.

Delegates can make bookings by either phoning the hotel on 02 6295 2944 and quoting the code “RAIL”, or by visiting this website https://www.thebookingbutton.com.au/properties/hotelheritagedirect and entering the code “RAIL” into the “Promo Code” box.

Please note that delegates with mobility issues should ask for ground floor accommodation as the venue does not have lifts to the upper floor.

Convention Merchandise

A stylish Convention polo shirt in royal blue with yellow trim will be offered at an additional cost of $35.00 ea. We will accept orders for shirts up until 31 August. The shirt features a comfortable blend of 50% cotton inner and 50% polyester outer in men’s or ladies’ styles. The shirt includes a pocket. The registration form has further details and access to the sizing chart.

Retailers

N Scale in Australia has a cadre of retailers who loyally support our scale. We want to encourage their participation in the Convention and would like them to contact the committee through the convconvenor@nscale.org.au e-mail address to discuss their participation.

Second Hand and Delegate Stalls

In addition to trade stalls we intend to have a number of “pop-up” stalls at lunch times for delegates to display or discuss their latest projects or sell pre-loved treasures. Details of this initiative will be circulated later.

Modeling Competition

The Convention will support the usual modelling competition, details will be developed soon, then disseminated through both the mailing list and the web site.

Presentations

From the recent survey the most requested topics for presentations were weathering, scenery, DCC and train operations (followed by air brushing, signalling, planning and scratch building). The availability of informed, enthusiastic presenters will dictate the feasibility of providing presentations on these subjects but the committee is working to provide as broad a programme as possible. The committee welcomes delegates who have modelling expertise and would like to present to contact us via convconvention@nsacle.org.au

Partners' Programme

A partners’ programme is also being offered. Canberra is host to many national institutions, attractions and retail outlets. Because there are so many attractions in the Canberra and surrounding regions, the programme will be self-directed with comprehensive notes and directions. Despite what you may have heard, Canberra is actually a relatively easy town to navigate. Our team will be able to advise you about the attractions and the best way to get to them. We are also exploring the feasibility of a bus tour of iconic Canberra sites with the possibility of a Lake Burley Griffin boat tour on Friday 11th October. This would be a great way for partners to meet or reacquaint while orientating themselves with Canberra. Details are being developed and will be advertised as soon as possible.

Refund Policy

If circumstances arise such that a delegate is compelled to withdraw their registration all efforts will be made to accommodate a refund of registration fees but this will be at the discretion of the organising committee.
